articulated frusta series
While growing up, my mother kept an amazing collapsible plastic cup in her purse that transformed from a flat object to a container able to hold a refreshing drink. The cup's ability to expand and collapse was due to its assembly of frusta -- truncated cones -- nested into each other but capped at the narrow end to prevent them from falling apart. The unimpeded movement of the organization of these parts is what fascinates me. The Articulated Frusta series, is an exploration of the construction of wearable objects in metal with frusta to produce multiple freely growing and receding forms. The resulting wearable pieces are complete when an intimate relationship is formed between the partaker/wearer as the piece shifts with their slightest touch or movement, changing its shape and creating an audible sound as well.
